Almost a year ago to the day, I returned home from a semester abroad in Sydney, Australia. Despite my best efforts, I was totally unprepared for a number of elements I encountered overseas, most notably the Australian climate. For those who may not know, there’s a massive hole in the ozone layer that conveniently sits directly above the continent of Australia. Specific sunscreen is worn to protect from the supercharged UV rays. I applied said sunscreen generously the first time I went to the beach, but even that couldn’t save me from the sun when I dozed off for a few hours in the warm sand. My sunburn was excruciating. It was by far the worst I had ever received and took weeks to heal. I still kick myself for that oversight, but it made me quickly realize how I need to take greater precautions to protect myself from future sun damage.
In light of May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share this story so that others can learn from my mistakes. Did you know that melanoma is the most common cancer among US women ages 25-29? Dermatologists report dressing defensively is the easiest way to defend yourself against sun damage and luckily, fashion is starting to pay attention. Mott 50 is at the forefront of sun protective garments, creating high quality clothing that is not only enjoyable to wear but also has built in ultraviolet protection. With Mott 50 you don’t have to make the choice between style and function.
Throughout the month of May, Mott 50 will donate 10% of sales from one of its most popular items, the Brela open cardigan, to benefit the Melanoma Research Alliance and its commitment to fund melanoma research.
I know I try and spend as much time as possible outside in the summer (blame my seasonal affective disorder) so between concerts, traveling, sports, and spending time at the pool, my skin takes a beating. The Brela cardigan is a great summer piece because it’s lightweight enough for the summer months but gives you the coverage you need (including nifty hand covers). Tie it closed over your swimsuit as a cover up or layer it over a sundress. I’d pair the mint Brela with white jeans or leggings and flats for a casual look. And style it tied over a maxi dress for a fun night out (check out the Mott 50 Blanch or Vela Plaza styles).
